Mi Amor Boutique Hotel Review: A Lovers Escape

Overview

Mi Amor Hotel is owned by the Colibri Boutique Hotel Group and is one of only 5 hotels in Tulum that are part of the Small Luxury Hotels of The World™.

As a strictly adults-only hotel, Mi Amor has been designed with romantic getaways in mind, offering an intimate setting with a small number of rooms that have been meticulously appointed. Regularly awarded as one of the best small hotels in Mexico it’s hard not to fall in love with the quaint design of Mi Amor.

Location

Mi Amor is located at the quieter, less developed beach of Playa Las Palmas. Hotel rooms and cabanas are nestled above the rocky cliffs of Playa Las Palmas, providing sweeping views of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean coast. A tranquil seaside setting close to the Tulum ruins, yet still far enough from the hustle and bustle that you can enjoy the serene sounds of the waves crashing below.

While the main Tulum beach hotel zone is about a 20-minute drive, the area provides lots of great local dining options within walking distance. Within a 10-minute walk, you can find the famous Gitano Beach Club, barefoot beachside dining at Mezzanine, or fresh seafood sashimi & sushi from Kogure Japanese. Downtown Tulum and the artsy Aldea Zama neighborhood are also within a short 10-minute drive offering a wide array of dining options.

Food

If you’d rather reach peak relaxation and avoid having to move anywhere, Mi Amor offers a refined menu in-house inspired by Mediterranean and Mexican cuisine designed by Chef Paul Bentley. The food is light, flavourful, and fresh and they will happily deliver it straight to your room.

Keep in mind that the Sunday Brunch menu is worth getting out of bed for. Live jazz is played poolside as you sip on champagne and regale in the delights of the fresh oyster and ceviche bar. Go for the Aguachile Verde, stay for the Bottomless Mimosa’s.

Rooms

Rooms are barefoot luxury, with natural furnishings of wood, bamboo, and linen, complementing the palm-fringed scenery outside.

Playful touches add some feminine sensuality to the room with tantra books and horoscope guides to romance. Holidaymakers looking for a titillating evening can find a box of delights bedside.

The rooms are equipped with all the necessary essentials like air-conditioning, king-sized beds, large bathrooms, and coffee & tea making facilities, and safety deposit boxes.

We recommend upgrading to a sea view room to enjoying waking up to the striking surroundings.

Hotel Highlights

The hotel at Mi Amor is centered around the pool, and for good reason. Art deco-inspired furnishings bring this beauty to life, allowing you to sunbathe in sophistication, draping over light pink loungers.

The poolside service goes above and beyond, the staff won’t hesitate to walk through the pool to hand you your margarita ensuring you never have to lift a finger.

Don’t want to pull yourself out of the pool for your romantic dinner date? Don’t worry the team at Mi Amor has a solution for that too. Keep your feet cool while enjoying the view at an intimate in-pool table setting and watch a stunning sunset over the beach.

Things to Do

While Mi Amor is the ultimate setting to practice enjoying the art of doing nothing, if you do decide you want to head out you will be spoilt for choice. We recommend the following activities nearby:

  • Soak up some Mayan history and take a walk around the Tulum ruins

  • Take in the breathtaking aesthetics of Tulum’s hotel zone and head to some of the top beach clubs

  • Swim in the crystal clear cenotes, head to Gran Cenote early to avoid crowds, and get some one-on-one time with the turtles.

  • Bike to Downtown Tulum and indulge in Tulum’s best Tacos at Taqueria Honorio

  • Want some adventure? Get to Xel-Ha natural waterpark for snorkeling, zip lines, cenotes, and stingrays

Best Time To Go

If you are going to go to Tulum, try skip the seaweed season from April - September. We have visted over the seaweed season and managed to find some great prices (up to 70% off) but note that the pricing is due to the fact that you can’t swim with the seaweed and any beach based activities will be severly impacted.

We recommend November, as the seaweed should be gone and the weather begins to clear up, but it isn’t as busy as the peak Dec/Jan period. Otherwise February is also a good time as you’ll avoid the rain, and get to enjoy the crystal clear water. At this time you will find prices on the higher side, however we recommend paying a little bit extra to enjoy the beach over this period. To get the best deal on hotel pricing we always recommend booking directly with Colibri Hotels, they often run last minute specials if they aren’t booked out. You can find the link to book Mi Amor here.

Final thoughts

Mi Amor is the kind of charming boutique hotel that most small hotels aspire to be. The thoughtful design drives you to book, the accommodating, warm staff are what makes you want to stay and the beautiful surroundings will make sure you never want to leave. While Mi Amor might feel worlds away from the ostentatious atmosphere of the Tulum Hotel Zone, you’ll find yourself wanting to come back to this oasis as soon as you exit the lobby.

If you are traveling with a family, Mi Amor is an adults-only hotel, we recommend La Zebra for a family-friendly boutique hotel on Tulum’s beachfront.
