Onyx: The Downtown Tulum Restaurant You Need To Try.

Onyx is one of those unassuming gems that you happen to stumble across on a side street in Downtown Tulum.

The modest boho exterior is a refreshing change from the ostentatious style of the hotel zone. Having only a few seats in the front sets the tone for an intimate, relaxed dining experience. We came here after walking through the hustle and bustle of the main downtown road. We were looking for a respite from the blazing sun and street vendors hawking dreamcatchers and decided on the cool and calm outdoor setting of Onyx.

Inside we were greeted with a warm smile and taken to our seats

As we arrived at this restaurant on a whim without checking the menu prior, we were pleasantly surprised to read what was on offer. A wide array of moderately priced Mexican classics included tacos, chilaquiles, and ceviche. The waiter was amiable, and as we droned on about the heat he recommended some refreshing cocktails and beers. To our delight, these were brought over promptly and we continued to chat away with Alonso over our drinks. I had a spicy margarita with fresh habaneros. It was fiery hot but deliciously balanced. The guys opted for something lighter, deciding on a chilled local Cerveza.

After a few drinks and some great banter about local driving etiquette we found the dish we were looking for

While mid-conversation, out of the corner of my eye, I saw another table being delivered the ceviche. The perfect dish for the blistering afternoon heat. Looking too good to pass up, we ended up getting both versions on offer; fresh fish and shrimp with fresh fish. This was hands down the best ceviche we have had in Tulum. Presented beautifully, fresh, juicy seafood with zesty lime, and a touch of mango that added a hint of sweetness without overpowering the dish. The size of the meal was great too, and it ended up being one of the better value options in the area.

ONYX was a delight from start to finish.

The only regret we had was not finding this charming sanctuary earlier. Hopefully, we’ll find our way back to Onyx soon for more great conversations, margaritas that will set your mouth on fire, and even better food.
